Lines and wrinkles can form over time as we age and lose elasticity in our skin. The causes are many—pollution, sun or UV light, and repetitive facial expressions whether frowning or smiling and an unhealthy lifestyle are among the most common. Wrinkle relaxers can help smooth the skin, diminishing wrinkles, rejuvenating the appearance, and bringing back the look of youth.

What are wrinkle relaxers?

Neurotoxins, or wrinkle relaxers are substances that alter the function of the nervous system by blocking the communication channel between nerves and the muscles, in essence, forcing the muscles to relax. Wrinkle relaxers have been widely used to diminish wrinkles and rejuvenate the appearance, but have become more and more common as a means to prevention. It is important that any injections are done by a well-trained professional with experience, and a good understanding of anatomy and structure, such as a certified plastic surgeon.

What are the common neurotoxins?

You have probably heard of the three most common FDA approved wrinkle relaxers—Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin. These are brands of neurotoxins that all have the same active ingredient, in common, botulinum A. When injected, the wrinkle relaxer acts to block signals from the nerves, paralyzing the muscles. This keeps the facial muscles relaxed, preventing creases and further wrinkling of the treated area. Neurotoxins may be used by themselves or in combination with other procedures. How they are used and which one is correct for you depends on your specific aesthetic goals as well as your anatomy, which Dr. Saigal will review with you during your private consultation.

What should I expect with treatment?

You may be given a topical anesthetic, though this may not be necessary. During the injection, you may feel a slight pinching, but you should not experience much pain. Afterward, you may have some swelling and redness or possible bruising. Results will not be visible immediately, but you should see the final results within the week. You should be able to continue most of your activities after treatment, but take care to keep your head upright for several hours and avoid strenuous exercise and massage. Since each person is different, your treatment and results will be unique but you can expect your results to last for several months.

What areas are most commonly treated with wrinkle relaxers?

  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Vertical forehead lines, often call the elevens
  • Crow’s feet or eye wrinkles
  • Corners of the mouth
